Volunteering Opportunities for Young People at the Big Read

Don’t let your pupils miss out

Help young people in your school develop their confidence and gain work experience by informing them of the opportunity to volunteer to help with The Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge at their local library. Not only will they make a positive contribution to the local community, by helping children read, but they will come away with good evidence for their CVs and Personal Statements. They can also use the experience for the ‘community’ element of a Duke of Edinburgh award.

The opportunities are for young people aged 13 – 24, at any time from 16 July –17 September.

The young people will receive training and support to make it an enjoyable volunteering experience, and will work to enhance the experience for the children and families completing the reading challenge. Other tasks will involve:

  • signing children up to the challenge and administering rewards
  • promoting ‘The Big Friendly Read’ and website to families and children
  • putting up displays
  • topping up book displays and helping children find books
  • helping plan and carry out themed activities, such as craft sessions or story times

Young people who would like to get involved should contact their local library, or visitwww.oxfordshire.gov.uk/libraries.
