GCSE results 2016

We are delighted to have another set of outstanding results – the best ever!

This year 84% of students have achieved the benchmark of five or more passes at grade C and above, including English and mathematics – our best set of results ever, beating the previous best result in 2014 (82%).

Please note however that this year the measures in the performance tables will be different.  The key headline figure will be the percentage of students achieving grade C and above in both English and maths. A stunning 87% of our students achieved this benchmark.  Another key measure will be Attainment 8, on which we scored 59, meaning our students averaged a middle grade B in all their examinations.

For the fifth consecutive year, our results are above the key 70% barrier, with two of those years being above 80%.

Achievement in the subjects that make up the English Baccalaureate was outstanding, with 50% of students gaining passes at C or better in all of English, mathematics, two sciences, a language and a humanity.  The national average for this measure in 2015 was only 24%, so students are leaving Gillotts exceptionally well prepared in the ‘facilitating subjects’ that are highly valued by the Russell Group universities.  32% of students gained an A* or A in English Language and 30% in mathematics.  87% of students achieved A*-C in English Language, 89% in English Literature and 93% in mathematics.  In each of biology, chemistry, physics, over 45% of grades were A* or A.  In history and geography over 33% of grades were A* or A.

Across the board, our most able students achieved exceptionally well. 30% achieved five or more A* and A grades, and 16% of students achieved eight or more passes at grades A* or A.

The Headteacher, Catharine Darnton, said:

“Over recent years, we have seen a marked and consistent improvement in results at Gillotts and we are delighted that this year’s results are our best ever.  Early analysis also suggests that, as we were challenged to ensure by Ofsted, students eligible for the pupil premium and students with special educational needs have made really good progress. Coupled with the outstanding performance by our most able students, this shows that all students, whatever their background, do exceptionally well at Gillotts.  These results will confirm us as one of the consistently best performing schools in Oxfordshire and look set to make us the top performing state school in the county this year.  This is a consequence of the commitment and hard work of the students and staff.  I am very proud of all that the students have achieved and would also like to recognise all the support that students have received from their families.  These results come about through successful collaboration between student, teachers and parents.”
